An ‘Empathy Event’ was organized by the Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) Disabled Student Coordination within the scope of World Blind Day and White Cane Day. The event aimed to help students understand the life experiences of visually impaired individuals more closely, featuring film screenings and empathy applications.

In the program conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melda Soysal Tomruk, a faculty member of the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, students had the opportunity to view the world of visually impaired individuals from a different perspective. During the event, short films titled ‘Karanlık’ and ‘The Lunch Date’ were screened, addressing empathy and awareness topics through the films.

Students empathized with their eyes closed

After the film screening, an empathy application was conducted in the mini park created by the Physiotherapy Community in the Avşarhan building. Students attempted to overcome obstacles prepared with their eyes closed, experiencing the difficulties that visually impaired individuals may encounter in daily life.

The event contributed to participants' better understanding of the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals, aiming to increase social awareness and strengthen understanding towards disabled individuals.

The event held on the occasion of World Blind Day and White Cane Day concluded with the message that ‘understanding differences, questioning prejudices, and creating an accessible living space for everyone is a social responsibility.’
